What is Aromatherapy?
Most of us have heard about aromatherapy but may not know what it is really about. Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine which is used in the treatment of many conditions through the use of essential oils. It may be used to improve your mood, help you to sleep, or to relieve pain. It can also reduce depression, relieve anxiety or stress.
There is much more to aromatherapy than nice smells though. Many people believe it has had a significant effect on their lifestyle and well being. Aromatherapy is based on the use of different essential oils which come from various plants. These oils are very concentrated and their effects are quite visible. A common use of essential oils is as a sleep aid. Certain fragrances promote relaxation which in turn can help you to fall asleep.
Many essential oils have an antibacterial effect. Tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil are especially well know for this quality. Eucalyptus oil is often used in cleaning products for this reason. Tea tree oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, and lavender oil are great anti-fungal oils and may be used in the treatment of athlete’s foot or as a deodoriser in closed cupboards. Lavender and manuka honey oil can be useful in the treatment of burns.
Some people dispute its effectiveness but there is no reason not try it. At the very least you’ll get to enjoy the nice perfumes which will leave your house smelling beautiful.
